WC Schools prepare for fall

District works on plans for three scenarios based on COVID-19

The Webster City Community School District is asking for families and community members to provide their input and feedback as it plans for the 2020-21 school year. Currently, four work groups are working on various aspects of the plan to return to school for next fall. We anticipate a survey to go out in late June to get parent and community input on some aspects of the plan.

WCCSD is working on plans for three scenarios related to the start of the 2020-21 school year. The plans are based on guidance from the Iowa Department of Education, which has asked all districts in the state to prepare for the following scenarios:

1. The District can welcome back all students into school buildings and resume a mostly normal school day schedule. This may involve enhanced cleaning protocols, mask wearing for most students and/or staff and social distancing.

2. The use of a hybrid model and staggered schedule. This may involve students attending in-person classes on different days of the week, with the rest of their learning taking place remotely.

3. The District begins the school year delivering all instruction remotely, using a model similar to the one we used this spring. All remote learning would be required.

Each plan will take into account a variety of factors, including instructional delivery, technology, transportation, food service, activities and cleaning protocols.

“There continues to be a great deal of uncertainty around what the start of the school year will look like in our school district and across Iowa,” said Dr. Mandy Ross, WCCSD Superintendent. “We will be working hard throughout the summer to plan for all possibilities to ensure our students continue to learn once the school year begins. We will keep our community updated throughout the summer as we move forward in our planning and receive further guidance from the Department of Education and Department of Public Health.”

News and updates related to COVID-19 and the start of the 2020-21 school year will be posted to the District’s website, at http://www.webster-city.k12.ia.us .
