Kendall Young Library previews December activities

Kendall Young Library will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27.

It will also be closed on Wednesday, December 24, and Thursday, December 25, as well as Wednesday, December 31, and January 1, during the holiday season.

Patrons of all ages are invited on Saturday, December 6, between 10 a.m. and noon to try their hand at cookie decorating in conjunction with the Webster City Christmas in the City events. The cookie decorating will be held inside Kendall Young Library and is a free event.

Throughout the month of December, The library will host multiple programs

Adult Afternoon Movie — Adults are invited to start off the holiday season with the movie classic “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The movie will be featured in the downstairs meeting room beginning at 1 p.m.

Adult Daytime Book Club — Join in the December Book Club discussion about a variety of Christmas books. A surprise Christmas book is available at the adult checkout if you are interested in participating. The club meets on Tuesday, December 9, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. to discuss. There will also be a cookie exchange for all that are interested in participating. A book for the January Book Club will be announced at this time.

Adult Evening Book Club — Join in the Adult Evening Book Club discussion about a variety of Christmas books. A surprise Christmas book is available at the Adult Checkout if you are interested in participating. The club meets on Wednesday, December 10, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Adult Bingo — Patrons are invited to join in an afternoon of free Bingo. This event is on Tuesday, December 16, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Books & Bourbon Silent Book Club — The library works with Wildcat Distilling Co. to offer patrons a Silent Book Club. Adults are invited to gather at Wildcat Distilling Co., 626 Second Street, Webster City, on Thursday, December 18, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Bring a book, grab a drink, and enjoy an introvert happy hour. This event is always the third Thursday of each month.

Adult DIY — Take & Make Adult DIY is ongoing throughout December. Stop by the adult check-out desk for all the materials to make a Tin-Can Reindeer. Supplies are limited.

SPICE Club — Add some spice to your life with the KYL Spice of the Month Club. Vanilla Bean will be featured beginning Friday, December 5. Samples will be available throughout the month while supplies last.

Especially for Teens

Teen Lounge — Patrons in sixth through 12th grade are invited each Tuesday in December from 3:30 to 5 p.m. to join special activities, video games, snacks, crafts, board games, and more. This is a come-and-go style event. Note: During the winter break, regular weekly programs are not scheduled, but a variety of on-your-own activities will be available throughout the library.

Homeschool TECH BUILD — Students will have time to Engineer Your Imagination. On Thursday, December 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. there is an opportunity to build using supplies from the STEM Cart. This is designed for youth second through 12th grade and will be held each month in the teen area. Parent participation is encouraged.

Especially for Children

LEGO Build (Children’s Department) — Each Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. throughout December there is the opportunity for kids to test their building skills.

Tales Around the Town — The library, along with local Webster City businesses, will take storytime on the road. Each week families are invited to meet at a designated location, hear a story and experience the host location. There is no registration required, just follow the signs. Here’s the line-up:

December 1 — Kendall Young Library, 1201 Willson Avenue, 5:30 p.m.

December 8 — Grama’s Diner, 725 Second Street, 5:30 p.m.

December 15 — Kendall Young Library, 1201 Willson Avenue, 5:30 p.m.

Wild Things (TK-second) — Meets on Tuesdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m. in December. This time will offer a variety of stories and activities each week.

Fuzzy Ducklings (under 3 years) — Meets on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in December. This is a parent/child experience.

Hungry Caterpillars (3/4 year preschool) — Meets on Thursday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in December. This is an interactive story time.

Tween’s Time (third – fifth grade) — Meets on Thursdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m. in December to explore crafts, STEM, cooking and much more.

Friday Cookies, Scoops, & Books — Drop in at the Children’s Department on Fridays (December 5 12 and 19) between 3:30 and 5 p.m. for an afternoon snack as you pick up some books for the weekend. This is a come-and-go event.

Drop-In Saturdays — Kids and families are invited to “Drop-In” to enjoy a time to get creative. Each Saturday in the Children’s Department there will be a come-and-go activity available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Here’s the line-up:

December 6 — Cookie Decorating (10 a.m. to noon only)

December 13 — Yarn Wrapped Christmas Ornaments

December 20 — Paper Strip Christmas Trees

December 27 — Spiral Melting Snowmen

A reminder: During the winter break — December 22 to January 5 — regular weekly programs are not scheduled unless noted, but a variety of on-your-own activities will be available throughout the library.
