Kendall Young Library’s summer program invites patrons to ‘Level Up’

Kendall Young Library patrons are invited to participate in its Summer Library Program — “Level Up at Your Library.”

The summer will feature events, contests and activities that are geared for each age group: children, teens and adults. A variety of special speakers, shows, crafts and fun family events are planned for both at the library and throughout Webster City. Stop in beginning June 2 to get started on the many things the library will have to offer.

Here’s what’s coming in June for adults

Kendall Young Library will host Adult Programs throughout the month of June.

Adult Summer Reading Program — There is a “Seven in Seven” reading challenge, Mini Art Show, and a scavenger hunt throughout the library. Details and resources to participate are available at the adult checkout desk beginning June 2.

Adult Daytime Book Club — Join the library for the June Book Club discussion about “Mrs. Nash’s Ashes” by Sarah Adler. Books are available at the adult checkout. Discussion will be on Tuesday, June 10, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Adult Evening Book Club — Join the library for the Adult Evening Book Club discussion on the book “The Summer of Yes” by Courtney Walsh. Books are available at the library. Discussion will be on Wednesday, June 11, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Puzzle Competition (age 12+) — Register for a fast-paced Puzzle Competition. Teams of four will compete to finish the puzzle first. This is on Saturday, June 21, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Be the team to finish first. Call or register online. This event is free. Teams of four must include a minimum of one adult. Registration required.

Pet Portrait Embroidery Workshop — Tuesday, June 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Kendall Young Library will host a Pet Portrait Embroidery Workshop presented by local artisan Karlie Hunter. You will learn simple stitches to create an ornament of a pet. This is the perfect opportunity to remember a pet, make a gift for a friend all while “Leveling Up” your fiber arts skill. This is a beginner level workshop, but all ages 13+ are invited to come. This class does require registration (call or online) and a fee ($30, payable to Karlie Hunter). Once registered, you will need to submit your pet photo to handfulofmade@gmail.com so your personalized project will be ready for you at the workshop.

SPICE Club — Add some spice to your life with the KYL Spice of the Month Club. Culinary dried lavender will be featured starting on Friday, June 6. Samples will be available throughout the month while supplies last. This is a fun way to explore different cultures and flavors. Each month there will be a featured herb or spice. A limited number of kits will be available each month with a small sample, information about the spice, and a couple recipes to try.

COMING IN JULY — A Self-Defense Workshop for Women will be offered on Saturday, July 19, at 1 p.m. Also, there will be an Exciting Interactive Game Show Party on Monday, July 28, at 5:30 p.m. The Game Show Party is presented by Happy Face Productions and is intended for patrons ages 13+.

Children’s Summer Reading Program — Patrons, birth to fifth grade are invited to join in a variety of “Level Up at your Library” summer programs. There is a reading challenge, activity bingo, and great programs each week. Details and resources to participate are available at the children’s checkout desk.

Children’s Special Events — Saturday, May 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Bubble Stations with Rick Brammer at Kendall Young Library. Lunch provided.

Thursday, June 26, 5:30 p.m. — Meet a Superhero at Webster City Market Night, sponsored by Kendall Young Library.

Tuesday, July 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. — Family Pool Party at the Webster City Municipal Outdoor Pool. This is a free event for the whole family.

Thursday, July 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Fonziba Drums (ages 8+) at Kendall Young Library.

Thursday, July 17, at 6 p.m. — Family Foam Party at Webster City Market Night, sponsored by Kendall Young Library.

Children’s Weekly Programs:

Wild Things 1 (PreK-K) will meet on Monday, June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, July 7 and 14 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Wild Things 2 (first-second grade) will meet on Tuesday, June 3, 10, 17, 24, July 1, 8, and 15 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Fuzzy Ducklings (under 3 years) will meet on Wednesday, June 4, 11, 18 25, July 2, 9, and 16 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Tween’s Time (third-fifth grade) will meet on Thursday, June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3,10, and 17 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Hungry Caterpillars (preschool) will meet on Friday, June 6, 13, 20, 27, July 11, and 18 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Here’s what’s coming in June and July

for teens at the library

Teen Summer Reading Program — Patrons from sixth to 12th grade, are invited to join in a variety of “Level Up at your Library” summer programs. There is a 10-day reading challenge along with both scheduled and “on your own time” programs each week. Detailed information is available at the adult checkout desk or in the teen area.

Game of the Week — Each week throughout the summer there will be a new game featured as the “Game of the Week.” Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. the game will be presented with the rule and an opportunity to play with friends. The game will also be available all week if you want to stop in, try it out, and vote thumbs-up/thumbs-down on how you liked the game.

Teen Lounge — Patrons in sixth-12th grade are invited on Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. There will be weekly video games, snacks, crafts, board games, and more. Special crafts in the theme of “Level Up At Your Library” will be provided each week.

Teen Games — “Fun before the Sun … Thursdays” is time for games and adventures. Each Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. teens are invited for activities such as games, movies, a scavenger hunt, and mini golf which will be held inside the library. Bring a friend and stop in before heading outside for the afternoon.

Teen Crafternoons — Back by popular demand, the Kendall Young teen area will have a Crafternoon Station throughout the summer. Each week, beginning on Wednesdays, a new craft will be presented. This activity is available whenever the library is open.

The Teen Area STEM cart is available for the adventurous builder. The library has a variety of plans that can prime your inventive spirit. All materials will be provided. Teens are invited to stop at the reference desk anytime throughout the month to get more information. This activity will be available all summer long.

Community Lego Build — Students are invited to participate in building the Lego Disney Villain Icons. This project is available during all open hours of the library and is located in the young adult area.

Note: Throughout the summer, Kendall Young Library determines your age group by the grade you will be entering into in Fall 2025.
