‘Dining Manners and Menus in Victorian Iowa’

Can you set an elegant dinner table? Setting a proper table and eating politely were defining manners for a Victorian homemaker.

Webster City Women’s Club members and their guests will learn how Victorian Iowans dined with proper manners and menus at their monthly meeting on Monday, August 14.

Janet Dennis from Living History Farms in Urbandale will present the program at the Jane Young House at 1:30 p.m.

Dennis will use photographs to lead attendees through the courses of a meal teaching how modern thoughts on dinner evolved from the 1870s.

As a hands-on activity, attendees will practice laying a place setting, and serving and sitting correctly at an elegant meal.

Club President Joleen Hibbing will preside at a brief business meeting. The Collect and Pledge of Allegiance will be led by hostess Carol McKinney.

Refreshments to honor Jane Young’s 189th birthday on August 23 will be served by Donna Bristow, Carol McKinney, Kathy Kolbeck, and Debbie Jordahl.

Also this month, the Writers’ Group will meet August 17 at 10:30 a.m.

The Social will be held August 23 at 1:30 p.m.

Open hours at the Jane Young House and Vintage Clothing Exhibit will be August 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In honor of the Women’s Club’s 100th Anniversary, there is no charge for the tour, but freewill offerings are appreciated for the maintenance of the historic home of Kendall and Jane Young at 629 Elm St., Webster City.

The organization is planning a Centennial Celebration on September 17.
