FORT DODGE – The July 22 concert by the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will be held at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. Admission is free, courtesy of the City of Fort Dodge. Conductor of the Band is Jerrold P. Jimmerson.

There will be an ice cream social, starting around 6:30 pm, provided by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Bell Choir before the regular concert starts at 7:30 pm. Persons are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or a blanket, since there is no seating provided.

The Karl L. King Municipal Band will feature a variety of marches, classical works, and popular selections during their hour-long concert. Marches will include “Monte Carlo” by Karl L. King; Russell Alexander’s exciting circus march, “Olympia Hippodrome”; and John Philip Sousa’s “The Rifle Regiment”. Also on the program will be King’s exciting galop, “Circus Days”.

The evening’s classical offering will be the overture to the opera, Raymond (The Queen’s Secret), by the French composer Ambroise Thomas. Thomas attended the Paris Conservatory, and became one of the most successful French composers of his time. This opera had its premier in Paris in June 1851, and was a dismal failure, but the overture has become one of the most popular of all the French opera works. Also on the classical side will be Emile Waldteufel’s 1886 waltz, “Espana”. This melody became a #1 hit for singer Perry Como in 1956.

On the lighter side will be highlights from the Beatles’ popular record album, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. This album was released in 1968, and this year marks the 50th anniversary of that release.

Guest soloist for the evening will be Dr. David Klee, principal flute and piccolo player with the King Band as well as the Assistant Conductor. Klee is also principal flute with the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, and performs with the Comedia Musica Orchestra in Fort Dodge.

He will perform two selections with the King Band. First will be Cecile Chaminade’s beautiful “Concertino”, a showcase selection for Flute that demonstrates brilliant virtuoso technique and musicality. Following this presentation on Flute, Dr. Klee will present Arthur Pryor’s humorous “The Whistler and His Dog”, a classic Piccolo solo written in 1905.

Dr. Klee is presently Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies/Music Production & Technology at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake IA. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Flute Performance from the University of Georgia, a Master of Music from the University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Mercer University.

Guest vocalists will be Roxanne and Duane Amhoff from Fort Dodge. They will be singing “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” from Season 4 of the popular television series American Idol.

These summer concerts always close with the playing of our National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”. In case of inclement weather at the starting time, the concert may be cancelled.
