WCPD warns of IRS scam

Automated calls ask for financial information

1 min read

The Webster City Police Department has received numerous calls from citizens reporting phone calls from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or Social Security Administration (SSA). These calls are automated and will inform the caller that their Social Security number has been suspended and will ask for financial information to "un-suspend" the number. These calls and automated messages are a scam, according to police officials.

Police Chief Shiloh Mork said the IRS and SSA contact people through Certified Mail. They do not use automated messages or phone calls to collect financial information.

"If you receive one of these calls, hang up. Under no circumstances should you provide your personal information to anyone over the phone," he said.

Those who have concerns about a suspicious phone call or message should contact local law enforcement agency before doing anything else.
