Carlson places 17th at state golf for Hawks

BOONE — All throughout the spring sports season, the primary goal for South Hamilton junior Rebekah Carlson was to play at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Class 1A State Golf Tournament at Cedar Pointe Golf Course.

Carlson accomplished that goal, and sought greater glory. After all, two solid days on the course can take a golfer places.

Following the conclusion of the two-day event, which started last Thursday and concluded last Friday, Carlson was nestled nicely within Class 1A’s top 20 golfers. All together, Carlson netted a total of 188 strokes and 17th overall.

According to Kathi Fisher, SH girls’ golf coach, Carlson was very close to achieving another goal — a top 15 spot in the individual pecking order.

“(Carlson’s) goal was to finish in the top 15, and she was right there,” Fisher said. “Her short game was very solid both days. On her first nine holes (on Friday), she only had 13 putts. That was amazing, considering the speed and the breaks of the greens.”

“On the second nine, she had some trouble with her long game, but managed to pull out a decent score,” Fisher added.

Carlson fared well on the first day of the meet, finishing the 18-hole round with 91 strokes. By the end of round two, Carlson picked up 97 strokes.

“I know she was disappointed with her score on the second day, but she is determined to work hard and get back to state next season,” Fisher said. “She is excited to work on her game this summer.”

With the conclusion of the state meet, Carlson will be the leader for the Hawks come next spring. South High will lose seniors Savanna Freeman, Erin Hassebrock, Olivia Kix and Amanda Ostrem due to graduation, but will return multiple starters in Abby Adamski and Arynn Luppes.

Waiting in the wings will be Sophie Nibe and Valerie Wagner.

Grundy Center’s Abbie Lindeman topped the field in the individual side of the meet with a total score of 159 strokes.

Grundy Center also won the team meet in Class 1A with 706 strokes, followed by New London (729), West Branch (771), BCLUW (781) and Newell-Fonda (785).
