Hawk track teams compete at IATC indoor meet

While the snow flew around this past week, the South Hamilton track and field teams were able to enjoy the comforts of the great indoors. After all, the start of the outdoor track and field season is only a couple of weeks away.

Taking part in the Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ Indoor Championships, which were held on March 9 and March 10 at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames, the Hawks collectively posted four top-25 finishes.

The South Hamilton boys were headlined by senior Carter Balvanz, junior Kaden Schwandt and sophomore Jagger Ferrie, while senior Kate Barkema paced the Hawk girls.

Balvanz finished 12th overall in the Class 1A shot put, tossing the silver sphere for a distance of 40 feet, two inches. Schwandt landed 21st overall, with a distance of 35 feet, eight inches.

Ferrie had a solid outing in the boys’ 1600-meter run, placing 18th with a time of 5:35.22.

In the girls’ 60-meter preliminaries, Barkema took 23rd with a time of 8.3 seconds. Junior Tanna Thompson also competed, finishing 49th with a time of 8.73.

Junior Kendra Hoversten captured a 27th place finish in the girls’ shot put with a distance of 29 feet, nine and a half inches. Teammate Taylor Swanson also took part in the competition, placing 48th with a distance of 27.75 feet.

Junior Grace Neuberger took 39th in the girls’ high jump with a clearance of four feet, five inches and senior Kenzie Henderson was 64th overall in the girls’ 60-meter hurdles with a time of 12.25 seconds.

With the conclusion of the indoor track season, the Hawks will now prepare for the Ram Early Bird Invitational, which is March 27 in Jefferson.
