WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City football team is in the position to take care of business and punch their playoff ticket here Friday night.

The Lynx host Denison-Schleswig beginning at 7 p.m.

Last Friday night, Webster City (5-3 overall, 3-1 in Class 4A, District 1) rebounded from a tough loss to Spencer by punishing Storm Lake, 55-7.

Meanwhile, a win by Fort Dodge at Denison-Schleswig solidified the Lynx in the runner-up slot of the district, and a stunning loss by Spencer to Le Mars slightly opened the door for another title.

If Spencer falls to Storm Lake and Webster City wins, the Lynx would repeat as outright district champions.

In limited action last week, junior Jaxon Cherry ran for 154 yards and five touchdowns on just 12 carries. Ty McKinney, a senior, threw for 88 yards and two scores on just three passes, completing all three.

Keegan Hisler caught two of McKinney’s balls for 80 yards with a score, as Webster City continued to add its impressive rushing totals, coming into Week 9 with 2,902 yards and 35 TDs on the ground.

Cherry has 1,501 and 25, while CJ Hisler has rushed for 599 yards and McKinney has 413 with six scores. McKinney has also completed 27 of 54 passes for 568 yards and six touchdowns, with Keegan Hisler recording a team-high 215 yards in the air.

The Lynx rank fifth in the state and first in 4A in rushing yards, and are third in 4A in rushing TDs. They are averaging 7.6 yards per carry on the season.

Denison-Schleswig (4-4, 2-2) has won two of its last three overall, besting LeMars and Storm Lake while allowing just 14 total points in its last three wins overall.

Junior quarterback Luke Wiebers has thrown for 868 yards and rushed for another 223 with nine total scores, while senior Jaxson Hildebrand has 678 yards and seven TDs on the ground.

Jake Fink, a junior, is the top target for Wiebers, hauling in 26 passes for 360 yards and a touchdown.

D-S lost to the Dodgers last week, 28-7.

Last year, the Lynx won in Denison, 56-14.

Throughout the regular season, Webster City has rebounded from a loss each time. They did so after defeats to Humboldt, Waverly-Shell Rock and Spencer, outscoring the next three opponents, 158-21.
