VAN METER — The South Hamilton girls’ golf team kept its season afloat and took a big step toward a potential spot in the state tournament here on Friday.

Paced by two players on the first page of the leaderboard and a key contribution in the middle of the lineup at Lakeview Country Club, the Hawks finished second in the six-team Class 2A Region 4A field to advance to Wednesday’s regional final in State Center.

South Hamilton carded a 439 to settle comfortably into the runner-up position. Defending state champion Van Meter rolled on its home course to the team title with a 393, while Woodward-Granger was third with a 447. All three advanced to the next round.

Miranda Deppe avoided trouble well enough to fire a 96 and finish third for South Hamilton. Rebekah Carlson was right behind her, in a tie for fourth, with a 102.

Grace Young was 14th with a 119, and Abby Adamski stepped up her game with a 122 to finish 16th.

“Abby Adamski came in clutch with a score we needed as a team to finish second,” South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said.

The Van Meter duo of Shae Bernhardt (84) and Regan Bernhardt (95) finished first and second individually.

Advancing out of the region 4B field were Williamsburg, West Marshall and Albia. The six teams will all be at Lincoln Valley Golf Course on Wednesday with spots in the state tournament on the line.

South Hamilton is familiar with the 18-hole layout, which serves as Heart of Iowa Conference rival West Marshall’s home course. The Hawks shot a 428 and placed fourth at the league tournament on the course earlier this month.
