Moore, Ramirez, relays win gold for runner-up Lynx at Pokey Relays

POCAHONTAS — Six victories, including three gold medal relay efforts, keyed the Webster City boys’ track and field team’s runner-up finish at Friday’s Pokey Relays.

JJ Moore won both throws and Jose Ramirez was the best at 800 meters, as the Lynx tallied 133 points to nip meet host Pocahontas Area (131) by two points for the second-place spot. Humboldt (178) ran away with the team title.

WCHS collected 14 medals in all — six gold, three silver and five bronze — despite competing without junior CJ Hisler, one of its most versatile sprinters.

Moore continued his regular-season dominance in the field events by winning the shot put (53 feet, 2 inches) and discus (144-7) with relative ease. He’ll compete in both events at the Drake Relays later this week.

Ramirez, who usually runs the mile for WCHS, cut his individual race in half and walked away victorious. He turned in a time of 2:18.32 in the 800, while teammate Tristen Maxwell (2:21.03) wasn’t far behind in third.

Riley LaSourd (400, 56.02) grabbed a silver medal, while other individual bronze medals went to Keegan Hisler in the high jump (5-6), Gabe Rollins in the 110 high hurdles (19.78) and Lincoln Tielke in the 400 hurdles (1:07.18).

Even without CJ Hisler on the anchor leg, the Lynx still won the 4×100 (46.05) and 4×200 (1:37.32), as well as the 4×400 (3:54.69).

Skyler Scott ran the final leg of the 4×100 after Charlie Stansfield, Cherry and Keegan Hisler got the baton around. The same four bested the 4×200 field with Cherry on the anchor. LaSourd and Ramirez ran the first and fourth legs of the 4×400, while Luke Estlund and Brayden Henely ran the middle two legs.

Second-place relays were the 4×800 (9:34.74) and distance medley (4:17.18). Third went to the shuttle hurdle relay (1:12.96).

WCHS will travel to Alleman for the North Polk Relays on Tuesday.
