THE FALL GUYS: Remsburg and Greenfield golden at HOIC tourney

NEVADA — Pin or be pinned — when Brent Greenfield was a freshman and sophomore, that’s usually how it went when he stepped onto the wrestling mat.

But something changed at the start of the 2020-21 season and it’s only become more apparent as he navigates his way through his senior campaign this winter.

That “be pinned” part? That’s in the past.

Now it’s just pin, pin, pin … well, you get the gist.

Greenfield, South Hamilton’s seventh-ranked (Class 1A) 182-pounder, and teammate Keyton Remsburg, a sophomore 126-pounder, became The Fall Guys at Friday’s Heart of Iowa Conference tournament inside the Nevada Fieldhouse, as they trucked through their brackets with ease to win individual league titles. They were the leading point getters for the Hawks, who finished fifth in the field of eight with 1091⁄2 points.

Greenfield and Remsburg produced five falls and a technical fall and finished amongst the most dominant grapplers in the field. Both won their first conference crown.

“It’s a really good feeling because last year I was seeded first (at the HOIC tournament), but then kind of choked,” Greenfield said. “So it was a really big goal since last year’s conference tournament to come back and win it, and coming into this year I knew I could dominate everyone.”

“I wrestled the best I have all year,” Remsburg said. “This was a huge goal. This is part of the process of being one of the greatest wrestlers at South Hamilton, so this needed to get done if I want to be one of those.”

Greenfield (32-1) inched to within one win of 100 in his career, and now here comes the crazy part — of his 99 wins currently, only one is by decision. There are a few technical falls and forfeits sprinkled in there to go along with 79 pins. Only twice has he gone six or more minutes in his triumphs and one of those ended with a sudden-victory fall.

“I don’t know why that happens,” Greenfield said. “It used to be either pin or be pinned, especially when I was a freshman and sophomore, but that’s my style of wrestling. I go out there and try to bulldog everybody.”

He certainly did that on Friday.

Two of Greenfield’s three bouts never made it out of the first period, including in the finals when he quickly took Greene County’s Noble Hoyt to his back. Greenfield locked up a cradle and got the fall in 1:43.

Greenfield admits he was hoping to see West Marshall’s Austin Pfantz, the only opponent to beat him this season, in his bracket. Pfantz opted to compete at 170 where he also won gold.

“I did want Pfantz,” Greenfield said. “I was a little bummed out when he weighed in at 170.”

Remsburg (29-4) ripped through his quarterfinal and semifinal opponents by fall and then piled up the points with a series of takedowns and turns in an 18-1 technical fall rout of Greene County’s Dakota Mobley in the finals. The bout was waved off with three seconds remaining in the second period.

“I only beat him by four (6-2 on Jan. 13) last time, so to come in here and tech fall him, I was astonished,” Remsburg said. “When the ref told me it was a tech fall, I didn’t believe him.

“Everything that we’ve been putting together, I displayed in that match. Coach (Dan Brodie) says in practice that we can’t look at the score, we just have to keep getting points, and that worked.”

South Hamilton also picked up a runner-up finish from Graham Peters, who went 2-1 with two falls. Landon Stolee (195) was third, Owen Duns (170) and Austin Busch (285) fourth, and Holden Klein (106) fifth. The Hawks were open at six weights.

With a league-high four individual champions, Roland-Story claimed the team title with 210 points, a 13-point gap over runner-up West Marshall (197). Greene County (168) and Perry (1271⁄2) followed.

All eight teams crowned at least one individual champion. South Hamilton, Greene County and Nevada joined Roland-Story with multiple gold medalists.
