BLAST DOUBLE: LYNX ROCK ’DOGS, GAELS

8 WCHS grapplers win twice to kick off NCC dual season

ALGONA — If this was baseball, Luke Estlund may have found himself a permanent spot in the batting order at lead-off.

Webster City won’t have that luxury with the freshman on the wrestling mat, but for one night anyway he set the table for a pair of dominant North Central Conference dual victories here last night.

In his varsity debut, Estlund picked up a win by decision at 138 pounds to kick off a 46-26 triumph over Algona, and then moved up to 145 to tack on another six-minute win to open a 66-3 dismantling of St. Edmond.

“Luke’s one of the new kids I was excited to see out there,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “He works hard, he’s very coachable and he’s got a bright future.”

WCHS (2-0, 2-0 NCC) had eight wrestlers go 2-0 on the night, and 13 of the 15 individuals that entered the lineup had their arm raised at least once. All in all, not bad considering the Lynx were without three experienced starters in Jordan Vankham (145), Cole Bingham (182) and ninth-ranked (Class 2A) CJ Hisler (195).

Third-ranked Carson Doolittle (113), top-ranked and two-time state champion Cam Phetxoumphone (120/126), Brady Jessen (160), Evan Estlund (170), Dylan Burnette-Bingham (195), Jaxon Cherry (220) and Landon Griffin (285) all had perfect nights as well. WCHS won 15 of the 21 contested matches in the two duals and owned a 49-11 edge in bonus points over the Bulldogs and Gaels.

“We definitely showed some fight and we have a lot of potential, but we need to get in shape,” Hisler said. “Our conditioning wasn’t where it should be, but it’s the first meet of the year and that’s to be expected a little.

“We’ve got a good group of kids and we have kids that can step in if we don’t have our varsity guys. That’s the makings of a good team.”

Freshman Deion Vangkham stepped up when WCHS needed him against Algona. He got the call at 120 and decked Cody Harms in 3:16 with a neck wrench to clinch the dual with two weights remaining.

Sure, the Lynx had Phetxoumphone waiting in the wings, but Hisler was still happy to see Vangkham perform.

“That was awesome,” Hisler said. “We threw Deion in there and he ended up getting the pin.”

Jacob Zabka, Algona’s sixth-ranked 113-pounder, weighed in at 120, but the Bulldogs opted to bump him up to 126 in an attempt to avoid Phetxoumphone. But the Lynx pushed their star up to 126 as well and Phetxoumphone spent three periods dissecting Zabka for a 19-6 major decision. Phetxoumphone rolled up six takedowns and tilted Zabka twice.

“We just wanted to get Cam a good match,” Hisler said.

Jessen and Burnette-Bingham both won twice by fall. Jessen sunk in a half to stick Algona’s Colby Jennings in 3:54 and then flattened St. Edmond’s Zach Rossmanith with 38 seconds remaining in their clash. Burnette-Bingham reversed the Bulldogs’ Chase Roof to his back for the fall in 1:33 and blasted through the Gaels’ Adam Walker in 1:51.

Doolittle, Cole Reiling (132) and Skyler Scott (182) all cranked out one pin. Doolittle, a state bronze medalist as a freshman, hit an ankle pick less than 10 seconds into his match against Algona’s Elijah White and spent the better part of the first period rolling up takedowns before ending it in 1:42. Reiling pancaked St. Edmond’s Sam Meyer in 5:11, and Scott tore through the Gaels’ Grant Webster in 3:37.

WCHS will now turn its attention to Saturday’s Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang Invite. Wrestling is scheduled to get started at 10 a.m.
