Lynx pile up 13 all-district honors, win MVP and POY honors

WEBSTER CITY — Total domination — both during the season and, in a way, the postseason.

Following a 2021 season in which the Webster City football team rolled to the Class 4A District 1 title and a trip to the state quarterfinals, the Lynx stepped to the forefront of the district honors as well.

WCHS collected eight first-team all-district honors, two more second-team accolades, and three honorable mention spots. That’s 13 awards, and head coach Bob Howard says each and every one of them was earned.

“I thought we did very well,” Howard said. “I thought pretty much everybody got what they should have got, so we were pretty well represented.”

Oh, but there was so much more.

Jaxon Cherry

WCHS also hoarded the individual awards. Junior wingback CJ Hisler was named the District 1 Offensive Most Valuable Player. Sophomore linebacker Jaxon Cherry was the district’s Defensive MVP. Senior Jamin Stuhr picked up the Defensive Lineman of the Year honor, senior Truman Klein was the co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, and senior JJ Moore was the co-Punter of the Year.

Howard has never been big on those individual honors, but he says they’re indicative of the season his team put together.

“With those awards, I think they’re team awards,” he said. “The individuals get to have them, but they’re a reflection of the team success.”

Hisler was a unanimous first-team all-district selection at running back, and he was joined on the top offense by Klein and fellow offensive lineman Beau Klaver.

“CJ was very deserving,” Howard said. “He was a big part of our offense and he had a lot of all-purpose yards with receiving and on kicks, so he had a very good season. Truman Klein is hands down the best offensive lineman in the district, and Beau is a fantastic guard.”

Stuhr and Connor Hanson were members of the first-team defense on the line. Cherry was a first-team linebacker, Devon Stoakes made the unit in the secondary, and Evan Estlund joined them as an athlete, the district’s version of a utility position.

Ty McKinney made the second-team offense as an athlete and Ben Auderer on the offensive line. Honorable mention accolades went to offensive lineman Cody Kolbeck, and linebackers Charlie Stansfield and Keegan Hisler.

“To be honest, I’m most tickled about Ben Auderer and Cody Kolbeck,” Howard said. “Ben is one of the best centers I’ve ever coached, and Cody is a testament to waiting your turn, putting your time in, doing the work and getting rewarded. I don’t know that I’ve had a kid that weighed 190 pounds that played tackle, but he played very well.”

WCHS, which outscored its five district foes 209-70, led the way in rushing yards (3,289), all-purpose yards (4,674), rushing touchdowns (42) and total touchdowns (54).

Hisler paced the district in all-purpose yards (1,616) and was second in rushing yards (1,032).

Jamin Stuhr

Cherry (61) and Stoakes (591⁄2) ranked second and third, respectively, in total tackles, and Keegan Hisler was the district leader in sacks (6). Stuhr made 33 tackles, 12 of them for a loss, and he also registered 21⁄2 sacks.

Moore averaged 39.4 yards per punt on the season.
