CARROLL — The Webster City boys’ tennis team picked up two wins in doubles at yesterday’s Class 1A district tournament hosted by Carroll Kuemper.

The duos of Heath Patterson and Seth Nelson, and Chase Black and Walter Moreira-Suarez both won their opening-round bouts and were then stopped in the quarterfinals.

Patterson and Nelson, the Lynx No. 1 doubles team, handled Harlan’s Nolan Blum and Keyton Francis, 6-0 and 6-4. But they ran into top-seeded Harrison Dahm and Colin Reis of Denison-Schleswig in the quarters and were swept, 6-0 and 6-0.

Black and Moreira-Suarez cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Derek Mohr and Hayden Gamble. But the Lynx were unable to pick up a game against another Denison-Schleswig team, Wyatt Johnson and Isaac Leinen, in the quarters.

WCHS singles players George Vila and Brody Henderson were both stopped in the opening round. Vila fell to St. Edmond’s Joseph Li, 6-0 and 6-2, while Henderson was handed a 6-0, 6-0 setback by Denison-Schleswig’s Carson Seuntjens.

It was end of the line for Patterson and Henderson, the Lynx two seniors. Black, Moreira-Suarez, Nelson and Vila are all juniors.

“The seniors worked hard (yesterday),” WCHS head coach Michael Ross said. “Heath played well in doubles and Brody worked hard against a quality opponent.

“I’m excited for next year, the juniors have all shown great improvement this season. I can’t wait to see them put it all together for next year.”
