Lynx ride stingy defense to 2-1 record at W-SR

Rossing with 10 saves, Mussman supplies 2 goals

WAVERLY — Only a setback in penalty kicks stopped the Webster City boys’ soccer team from running through the Waverly-Shell Rock tournament unbeaten on Saturday.

The Lynx went 2-1 on the day with wins over Charles City, 3-0, and Collins-Maxwell, 1-0. Their lone loss came to Decorah, 1-0 — a match that was decided in penalty kicks after a scoreless battle in regulation.

“It’s the first time this season we didn’t concede a goal,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said after his squad improved to 8-7 on the season. “I’m very proud of that and I hope the team is too. And we didn’t just do it once, we did it in all three games.”

Signorin credited his back line — Jon Magdaleno, Jake Lahr and Luis Montes — and goalkeeper Gage Rossing for keeping the scoresheets clean. Rossing made 10 saves on the day.

The marathon against Decorah lasted until the eighth kicker in PKs. WCHS connected on four of their attempts, while the Vikings knocked in five.

Matt Perin, Levi Mussman and Cam Carden snaked in goals in the rout of Charles City, as WCHS owned a 19-3 advantage in shots, including 12-1 on goal. Eduardo Perez had a pair of assists, while Martin Kasonga had one.

Mussman collected his second goal of the day in the 16th minute against Collins-Maxwell, and the Lynx defense did the rest. WCHS out-shot the Spartans 10-2, 6-2 on frame.

WCHS will rest early this week before it hosts Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
