Tesdahl uses DQ in 100 as motivation en route to 200 gold at Lady Eagle Relays

4x800 relay also a winner, Lynx 4th in team standings

EAGLE GROVE — Freshman Adeline Tesdahl continued to show her speed and versatility, and the Webster City girls’ track and field team had a second strong outdoor performance last night at the Lady Eagle Relays.

Tesdahl captured individual gold in the 200-meter dash, one of two event wins for the Lynx en route to 75 team points and a fourth-place finish. Algona Garrigan (119 points) fended off its crosstown rival Algona (104) for the team title, while Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (84) was third.

Tesdahl’s victory came after she was disqualified in the 100 for a false start. Lynx head coach Clint Howard said she responded with a chip on her shoulder.

“She’s got a lot of potential and I know the DQ in the 100 upset her pretty good in a good way,” he said. “She got out really well (in the 200) and was strong enough to hold on and win it.

“The challenging part with her going forward is narrowing down what we focus on because she’s such a good athlete. She’ll keep improving in the long jump and keep getting stronger in the sprints.”

Tesdahl was the silver medalist in the long jump (14 feet, 71⁄4 inches) — she finished right in front of teammate and bronze winner Bonnie Nohrenberg (14-33⁄4) — and also ran a leg on the Lynx runner-up 4×400 relay (4:37.32).

Shelby Queen, Dasha Sankey, Emma Peck and Kaelyn Butz teamed up to capture the top spot in the 4×800 (11:34.76). Queen, Sankey and Peck joined Tesdahl in the 4×400.

“I thought the 4×8 and 4×4 were very good highlights for the night,” Howard said. “That group works their tails off and they embrace the challenge of running those 4s and 8s. It’s been a long time since we’ve had that.”

Peck collected a silver medal for herself in the 800 (2:50.49), as did Lexi Nichols in the high jump (4-8).

The weather was less than ideal — cold, windy and wet — but Howard thinks it was a good experience for his athletes in the always unpredictable Iowa spring weather. WCHS could face similar challenges on Tuesday at Algona.

“I think it was a good experience for them to run in this and I thought they competed well,” he said. “We had some girls not feeling well and they stepped up and ran every race we asked them to.”
