Patterson rallies, ensures WCHS sweep of ’Dogs
HAMPTON — Heath Patterson was down, but he wasn’t out here on Monday. And so he fought … and fought and fought.
It paid off too.
Trailing 7-2 in his singles match, Webster City’s No. 1 player reeled off eight of the final nine games to rally for a 10-8 victory over Jonah Bollhagen that solidified a sweep for the Lynx in their dual meet against Hampton-Dumont/CAL.
The Lynx (2-0) weren’t seriously threatened in any of the other five matches, as they strolled past the Bulldogs, 6-0. WCHS went 4-0 in singles and then took both doubles bouts.
“A great night,” WCHS coach Michael Ross said. “It was great to see everyone get some playing time and then to come out 6-0 made it even better. Everyone is making great progress, which will be needed against some stiff competition coming up.”
Walter Moreira, Brody Henderson and Jayden Wibholm combined to surrender just four games in the Nos. 2-4 singles matches. Moreira dusted the Bulldogs’ Logan Miller, 10-1, at No. 2. Henderson throttled Jordan Cady by the same score at No. 3, and Wibholm dominated Jose Hernandez, 10-2, at No. 4.
Patterson and Seth Nelson fended off Bollhagen and Miller, 10-6, in the featured doubles clash. Chase Black and George Vila had no issues against Cady and Hernandez en route to a 10-1 rout.
