FORT DODGE — A sluggish start and too many missed opportunities cost the Webster City girls’ basketball team of picking up a North Central Conference victory here Tuesday night.

Trailing by eight points early on, the Lynx worked their way back into contention and even took the lead on St. Edmond in the third quarter. But the Gaels responded over the final eight minutes to pull out a 48-45 victory.

The Gaels (3-14, 2-9 NCC) swept the season series over WCHS (2-13, 1-9 NCC). The Gaels snuck away with a 30-29 win when the two teams met on Jan. 4 in Webster City.

WCHS shot 33 percent from the field (15 of 45) — not great, but certainly not catastrophic. But it was a struggle at the free throw line — 10 of 24 (42 percent), including 5 of 16 in the first half that aided St. Edmond in taking a 21-17 lead into the intermission.

Kelly Stoakes paced WCHS with 15 points and two assists. Leah Kasch also reached double figures with 10 points to go along with four steals. Livia Kasch finished with six points, six rebounds and two assists. Jenna Miller and Alley Odland both added five points. Miller led the club on the boards with eight, while Odland collected five rebounds.

Kacey Kruthoff (11 points) and Mya McClain (10 points) scored in double figures for St. Edmond. Kruthoff dropped in six of her points in the final quarter and McClain came up with three steals late to help the Gaels seal the win.

WCHS will be back on the road this evening to take on Hampton-Dumont/CAL in Hampton at 7:45 p.m.
