Hawks’ 170-pounder goes 4-0; Greenfield also reaches finals, places second at 182

MANSON — When Brent Greenfield walked into the South Hamilton wrestling room last month, looked at teammate Lane Swenson and made it known that was the guy he wanted to spar with throughout the season, that’s the moment when head coach Dan Brodie knew his lanky 182-pounder was ready to take that next step.

“From Day 1, he said this is who I’m going to wrestle every day, and him competing against Lane in practice has really helped his confidence,” Brodie said of Greenfield. “His mental growth is the biggest area where he’s improved in this early portion of the season.”

Battling a highly ranked teammate who is also a returning state medalist paid off for Greenfield on Saturday, as he kicked off his campaign with a runner-up effort at the Doug Wood Invitational.

Greenfield ripped off three consecutive pins, two of them coming in the first period, to reach the finals. Fifth-ranked (Class 1A) Ty Dennison of Woodbury Central ended Greenfield’s run on the spotlight mat with a fall midway through the third period, but not before the South Hamilton junior created a murmur with a throw at the edge of the mat.

“The kid he had in the finals was dang tough, but he threw him,” Brodie said. “It was a great tournament for him. He did a lot of things that maybe he wouldn’t have done in year’s past.”

Swenson, ranked No. 3 (1A) at 170 pounds, steamed his way to South Hamilton’s lone individual title. He didn’t get the potential finals match-up he wanted — second-ranked Blake McAlister of South Central Calhoun didn’t compete in the tournament — but that disappointment didn’t alter his dominance.

Swenson decked all four of his opponents in the first period, including previously unbeaten Creytan Grimm of West Bend-Mallard at the 45-second mark of the finals. Rather than play a takedown game with his foes, Swenson simply mowed them down without allowing a point.

“It was a great start to what is hopefully a great season for him,” Brodie said of Swenson. “He doesn’t need to drag matches into the second and third periods just for shape. He’s going to get the shape by the time February rolls around.

“I think Lane is just on a level right now where he wants to be the very best wherever he goes.”

Missing four expected varsity regulars — Keyton Remsburg, Elijah Balderas, third-ranked Trevor Thompson and Colton Willis — South Hamilton was open at four weights and slipped into ninth in the team race with 79 points. Woodbury Central crowned three champs and buried the field with 227 points. South Central Calhoun was second with 164.

The absences afforded Brodie the opportunity to throw some of his freshman into the lineup.

“For our young guys that had to be plugged into the lineup, they have to experience it to know what high school wrestling is like,” he said. “For us as coaches, it gives us an opportunity to see some of these kids wrestle for the first time. You think you know what you’ve got in the room, but it changes once you see the singlets put on.”

No other Hawk finished higher than fifth. Eli Angove (138) won a pair of matches, while Kaelen Miller (145) and Eddie Wirth (285) both won once.

South Hamilton will be at home on Thursday for a triangular with Roland-Story and Colfax-Mingo at 6 p.m.
