Rattenborg joins 100 wins club; Lynx split NCC duals with Clear Lake and CGD

Ranked No. 9 at 132, senior opens season with 8-5 win over No. 7 Nelson

CLARION — Hey, Chase Rattenborg, join the club.

Rattenborg, the No. 9-ranked 132-pounder in Class 2A, became the 20th Webster City wrestler all-time to reach 100 career victories here last night and he certainly had to earn it. He came out on top in the marquee match of the night against No. 7 (2A) Sam Nelson of Clear Lake, 8-5, for No. 99 and then breezed through Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Jackson Beisel by technical fall, 21-6, to reach triple digits.

Rattenborg put Nelson, a former state qualifier and North Central Conference champion, on his back twice during their six-minute tussle. He hit a headlock early to build a 4-0 lead and then cinched up a cradle in the third to create distance.

Rattenborg had planned to wrestle at 138 this season, but had a change of heart earlier this week. The extra cut paid off last night.

“He made that choice this week and he looked really good,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “For Chase to go out there against a quality opponent and wrestle like that, it’s a big confidence booster for him.

“Getting 100 wins is definitely cool, but he has bigger goals than that.”

Rattenborg was one of six WCHS wrestlers to go unscathed on the opening night of the season. Ninth-ranked Carson Doolittle (106), top-ranked and 2020 state champion Cam Phetxoumphone (113), seventh-ranked CJ Hisler (195) and Connor Shannon (220) all picked up a pair of pins. Jaxon Cherry (182) joined them at 2-0.

WCHS rolled through Clear Lake, 60-18, behind nine pins and 11 mat victories. The Lynx led CGD 17-15 after Rattenborg’s win in the sixth bout of the dual, but the meat of the Cowboys’ order took over and rattled off five consecutive falls to propel CGD to a 45-32 win.

“With what we’ve been dealing with, it was a positive start,” Chad Hisler said. “But we definitely want to improve and compete with (CGD). Our gas tank wasn’t quite where we need it to be, but we’ll keep improving.”

Doolittle, Phetxoumphone, Brayden Henely (120), Reece Sadler (126), Cole Bingham (160), Skyler Scott (170), Cherry, CJ Hisler and Shannon all ripped off pins against Clear Lake. Evan Estlund (152) added a tight 6-4 win over Carter Markwardt, as WCHS owned a 21-7 takedowns advantage over the Lions.

Cherry, CJ Hisler and Shannon brought WCHS closer with consecutive wins to wrap up the dual against CGD. Cherry tossed Christian Gaytan twice en route to a 10-5 win. CJ Hisler hit a switch off the whistle to start the second period and threw Nash Lienemann to his back for the fall, and Shannon chucked Camden Hanson to his back for the fall in 40 seconds.

Shannon needed just 64 seconds of mat time on the night.
