JEWELL — All of the hammers were in the lineup for South Hamilton last night, and they went to work.

Six wrestlers went 2-0 and 10 of the 11 in the lineup won at least once, as the Hawks opened their dual season with a pair of victories. South Hamilton prevailed in its Heart of Iowa Conference tussle with Roland-Story, 48-27, and then took care of non-conference opponent Colfax-Mingo, 48-33, in the nightcap.

Colfax-Mingo exited the gymnasium with a split, as the Tigerhawks downed Roland-Story, 54-24.

Despite being open at three weights — 120, 126 and 132 pounds — South Hamilton muscled its way past both foes on the strength of bonus points. All 16 of its wins came with the maximum additional points attached courtesy of eight pins, seven forfeits and an injury default.

At the upper weights is where South Hamilton shined. Third-ranked Lane Swenson (170), Brent Greenfield (182), third-ranked Trevor Thompson (220) and Colton Willis (285) all won twice with relative ease. Thompson, who is ranked at 195 where he’s eventually expected to compete, and Willis both missed the season-opening tournament, the Doug Wood Invite, in Manson last weekend.

Kaelen Miller (145) and Blake Harris (152) were also two-time winners. Holden Klein (106), Keyton Remsburg (113), Eli Angove (138) and Elijah Balderas (195) all put together 1-1 marks.

“From top to bottom, I really thought we wrestled well,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “Knowing we had Colton, Trevor, Elijah, Brent and Lane from 170 and up, we’re always going to have a chance. Our middle weights, we had some guys do some really nice things too.”

Brodie says having all of his veterans back in the lineup puts everyone at ease.

“It’s not just me, I think the team sees it too,” he said. “We’ve always stressed the seniors lead the team, and it’s hard when they’re not in there. But when they’re in the lineup, everyone feels like we have a shot every time we wrestle.”

Trailing Roland-Story 28-17 after nine weights, the Hawks reeled off five consecutive wins to rally for the win. Swenson, a returning state place winner, ignited the flurry with a quick fall over Jackson Sterle in 1:16. A quick fireman’s carry put Sterle in danger and Swenson went to an arm bar to get the fall.

Greenfield needed even less time, just 36 seconds, to deck Caden Strom to give South Hamilton its first lead of the dual. Balderas then took Jaxson Kadolph feet to back to get the pin in 1:58, and Thompson secured the dual win with a forfeit. Willis cranked Colin Hansen to his back in 1:53 to cap the 21-point win.

South Hamilton again found itself in catch-up mode against Colfax-Mingo. Behind 18-0 after three forfeits, the Hawks took eight of the next 10 weights to seize control.

Back-to-back falls by Angove and Miller, followed by a forfeit for Harris, evened the dual at 18. Angove led 5-2 when he got the pin over Cavan Magnuson, and Miller tossed Tevin Wamsher near the edge of the mat to end his bout in 1:15.

Consecutive forfeits for Swenson and Greenfield pushed the Hawks in front. Thompson’s first match action of the season didn’t last long; he notched a takedown in the opening seconds against Gaven Slycord and heard the slap of the mat in 30 seconds. Willis was in control of his heavyweight battle when Jared Gorman had to retire due to injury. A forfeit for Klein at 106 clinched the dual.

South Hamilton went 9-6 in contested bouts and owned a 45-30 advantage in bonus points. The Hawks also held a 15-13 takedowns edge over their opponents.
