Hawks crown 5 champs at CS Round Robin Tourney

Swenson, Greenfield, Thompson and Willis a combined 11-0 with 8 pins

MANLY — Five champions and two silver medal showings powered the South Hamilton wrestling team to a runner-up finish here at Saturday’s Central Springs Round Robin Tournament.

The Hawks’ nine grapplers combined to compile 56 team points, trailing only team champion and host Central Springs (661⁄2). The two teams won 10 of the 14 individual titles.

“The tournament was exactly what we needed,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said.

Third-ranked Lane Swenson (170 pounds), Brent Greenfield (182), third-ranked Trevor Thompson (220) and Colton Willis (285) combined to go 11-0 on the mat with eight pins en route to individual crowns. Holden Klein (106) also stood at the top of the podium, but did it without having to sweat. He was the only competitor in his bracket.

Keyton Remsburg (113) and Eli Angove (138) were both second.

Greenfield and Willis both pinned their ways through the field. Greenfield battled Central Springs’ Ben Navratil twice and ended the bouts in 1:31 and 3:17. Willis decked all three of his foes in the first period, the longest lasting 1:33 against Newman’s Henry Deteman.

“Brent is still lighting it up and Colton is possessed right now,” Brodie said. “He’s starting to turn that corner between being good and knowing you’re good.”

Following a first-round pin, Swenson was pushed to six minutes for the first time this season. After giving up an early takedown against Central Springs’ Kaden Jacobsen, Swenson took over and cruised to a 7-3 win.

“That was a great match because the kid from Central Springs knows what he’s doing,” Brodie said. “But going down 2-0, that’s awesome for Lane, learning how to wrestle when you’re down. Outside of that first takedown, there really wasn’t anything else that kid could do.”

Thompson, up a weight class from where he’s ranked at 195, ripped off a pair of first-period pins and then knocked off Tripoli’s Ethan Schellhorn, 6-1, and Central Springs’ Dalton Dewitt, 3-2. Dewitt has beaten past state qualifiers, so Brodie says Thompson’s ability to gut out a close match will provide dividends in the future.

“(Dewitt) is very good, he beat two state place winners last year,” Brodie said. “That was a tough match and that’s what we wanted for Trevor.”

Brodie was also impressed with Remsburg, a freshman who will eventually bump down to 106. Remsburg flattened Newman’s Liam Stockberger in 1:09 in the opening round.

“That kid, he works hard and he just approaches it the right way,” Brodie said. “He understands the losses in December are OK as a freshman, and they’re going to make him better in January and February.”
