No. 12 Norsemen fend off Hawks in 3 sets
Duns with 8 kills, Hewitt and Grady 3 each for feisty South Hamilton
After squandering a 14-6 second-set lead, the Norsemen reeled off eight straight points to close out the stanza and they cruised in the third for a 25-17, 25-18, 25-11 win.
South Hamilton (8-17, 1-2 HOIC) showed flashes, particularly in the second set when it peeled off a 12-3 spurt to move ahead 18-17. But Roland-Story’s depth and balance at net was too much to overcome.
The Norsemen (18-4, 5-0 HOIC) blasted 39 kills to just 19 for South Hamilton. They also piled up eight service aces and forced the Hawks into 18 attack errors.
Zoey Duns paced South Hamilton with eight kills. Mackenzy Grady and Caleigh Hewitt both finished with three.
A block by Hewitt and ace by Kaylee Oskvig sparked South Hamilton’s second-set spurt. The Hawks notched five straight points to claw back into contention and eventually pulled even at 16 following a Brenna Barquist ace and Duns kill. A Roland-Story miscue gave South Hamilton the 18-17 lead.
But following a timeout, the Norsemen resumed their front-row dominance to close it out.
Roland-Story, which played without its second-leading hitter Reagan Barkema, rattled off a 7-0 run early in the third set to take command.
Following the match, Oskvig was named South Hamilton’s Homecoming queen.
