WEEK 4 ON THE SIDELINE: WEBSTER CITY FOOTBALL

A 2021 BACKFIELD PREVIEW? Trey Mathis jogged to the sideline midway through the first quarter on Friday due to a leg cramp and turned the tailback duties over to sophomore Connor Hanson.

Hanson looked plenty comfortable in the role. He got just three carries, but he gained 6, 6 and 5 yards.

Hanson’s stint was short-lived though. Mathis was back soon enough, much to the chagrin of Humboldt.

“I had to get back out there for my team,” Mathis said.

MORE CONNOR HANSON: Hanson, the Lynx starting nose tackle, was credited with an interception in the first quarter and he actually returned it to the house. The touchdown was eventually waved off on a block in the back penalty, but that wasn’t the strange part of the sequence.

Jamin Stuhr deflected the Caden Matson pass into Hanson’s arms … but he dropped it … and then picked it up … and then started to run. Apparently every official blinked at that moment, because the interception stood.

BUMPS AND BRUISES: WCHS starting defensive end Kyzer Stanley laid on the turf for a few moments with an injured arm in the second half on Friday. He eventually returned to the field a few plays later, but he favored the injured arm the remainder of the way.

Head coach Bob Howard says the bumps and bruises are starting to add up as the regular season moves past the midpoint.

“We’re starting to get some nicks and injuries, so that’s a concern,” he said. “Our depth is a concern.”
