Lions close book on Hawks season in district final

JEWELL — Lightning didn’t strike twice for the South Hamilton baseball team.

Two days after they knocked off seventh-ranked Roland-Story in the Class 2A district semifinal round, the Hawks were unable to pull off a second consecutive upset on Saturday at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.

Des Moines Christian (14-6) got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning and then pushed three across in the bottom half of the frame to take command en route to a 6-1 victory over South Hamilton (9-8) in the 2A District 13 final.

“We had our opportunity in the first inning to jump on them and we didn’t,” South Hamilton head coach Kyle Galetich said. “Then we kind of threw it around in the bottom of the first and got behind.”

The Lions advanced to Tuesday’s Substate 7 final against Panorama (12-3) in Alleman. Panorama stunned fifth-ranked Woodward-Granger, 8-3, in the District 14 final on Saturday.

DMC out-hit South Hamilton, 8-5. More hurtful to the Hawks were the five errors they committed, which led to four of the runs being unearned. Carter Hewitt went the distance on the mound; the junior southpaw walked two and struck out three in a losing effort.

South Hamilton received singles from four different players — Brock Galetich, Quinton Grove, Lane Swenson and Brandyn Feighner — as well as a double from Elijah Balderas.

Otherwise, Lions’ pitcher Trey Castile was in control.

“I thought we swung the bats pretty well, but he’s a very good pitcher,” Kyle Galetich said of Castile. “He’s as good as we’ve seen all year.”

Castile played a key role in DMC jumping in front. He roped a two-RBI single off Hewitt in the first inning.

South Hamilton had hoped to continue its improbable postseason run, but Kyle Galetich said the season was a success simply because there was a season. And he hopes his six departing seniors — Grove, Feighner, Cade Flaugh, Nathan Wilson, Sheldon Tapper and Doran Lutjen — walked away with positive memories.

“I’m hoping this gave those seniors a little bit of closure for high school, and I appreciate all they’ve done for us,” he said. “We lose three senior starters, but we’ll return six guys that have two to three years worth of varsity experience next year, so we could be as good as we’ve been in a long time.”
