WEBSTER CITY — The Hamilton County Speedway announced yesterday that it has decided to postpone the racing program scheduled for Saturday and instead move it to next Tuesday, June 2.

It was an easy decision to make too.

Governor Kim Reynolds said yesterday that race tracks across the state can allow fans back into the stands on June 1. The capacity will be limited to 50 percent, but some fans are exponentially better than no fans, Hamilton County Speedway track promoter Todd Staley said.

“That’s huge. Very huge,” Staley said. “As a racer, going around the track and not seeing anyone cheering, it’s just not very much fun. Race tracks have been doing it, but it’s huge to get the fans back.”

Staley says that specific protocols will be adopted this week.

“Honestly, all I really heard was that we’re at 50 percent and then I quit listening because I was excited,” Staley said. “So I’ll go through and listen to (Governor Reynolds’) comments again … I don’t know if we’ll have X’s on the ground, but we’ll just keep social distancing in mind and try to keep six feet apart. We’ll probably have some hand sanitizer units put in place too.”

It will be Fan Appreciation Night at the speedway next Tuesday. Spectators will receive $5 admission into the event.

The salute to the 2020 class was originally part of the event, but Staley says that will be pushed back to sometime later in June to give more graduates the chance to take part.

The Hamilton County Speedway opened its 2020 season on May 9 without fans in the stands. A second program with an empty grandstand was held last Thursday.
