DFJ WRESTLER OF THE DECADE: DRAKE DOOLITTLE

Drake Doolittle, the DFJ's Wrestler of the Decade.

Welcome to the land of the obvious. C’mon, you had to know that Drake Doolittle was going to be named The Daily Freeman-Journal’s Wrestler of the Decade, right? Anyone who wants to argue either knows little about wrestling, or is a family member to another former Hamilton County wrestler from 2010 to 2020.

Doolittle, a 2019 Webster City graduate, took ownership of almost the entire Lynx record book during his four years on the prep mats.

Wins (175), pins (114), takedowns (557), team points accrued (1,190), single-season pins (33), single-season takedowns (181) and single-season team points (3211⁄2) — all of those records belong to Doolittle. Only Cooper Lawson’s single-season wins record (48) stops Doolittle from getting out the broom to signify a sweep.

Doolittle is one of only six WCHS individuals to win a state title.

He’s one of only three Lynx grapplers to qualify for state four times.

He’s one of only two WCHS wrestlers to win four state medals.

He’s the only Lynx wrestler to win four North Central Conference crowns, and the only one to reach the state finals and lose and then come back to right that wrong.

Beyond the records, wins and the Class 2A 120-pound state championship he claimed in 2019, Doolittle’s legacy will be one of dominance. As a freshman, he toppled eventual two-time state champion Justin Portillo of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows to earn his first league gold medal, and it was just one of many highlight victories over his career.

Also a 4.0 student, Doolittle is now a member of the Duke University wrestling team.

So, yeah, the Wrestler of the Decade distinction was a no-brainer.
