Swenson, Willis champs at Lynn Moody Invite

Hawks put 6 in finals; Galdeano, Miller, Balderas and Thompson 2nd

POCAHONTAS — Arguably the best day for the South Hamilton wrestling team in several years included six finalists, two champions and a fourth-place finish at Saturday’s Lynn Moody Invitational.

The Hawks compiled 147 points to finish behind Woodbury Central (2051⁄2), Pocahontas Area (175) and GTRA (164).

“It was a really good day,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “To get six in the finals is not something you always expect, but we’ve been wrestling our best wrestling the last couple of weeks. The guys had opportunities in some brackets and they took advantage.”

Lane Swenson (170 pounds) and Colton Willis (220) pinned their ways to gold medals. Swenson spent a total of 4 minutes, 8 seconds on the mat. Willis was even more efficient, as he needed just 1:26 to blow through his two opponents.

“It was business as usual for Lane,” Brodie said. “He had a game plan coming in and he executed it really well. Colton just took care of business. He had a bracket that looked favorable for him and he made it happen.”

Jose Galdeano (132), Kaelen Miller (138), Elijah Balderas (182) and Trevor Thompson (195) all placed second.

Galdeano, Balderas and Thompson decked all of their foes before the championship round. Miller reached the finals with a semifinal major decision win.

“Jose and Kaelen, they both wrestled good semifinal matches,” Brodie said. “Both of those guys have really been coming on the last couple of weeks, so it was nice to see them make it to the championship round for the first time.

“Elijah is slowly building into a nice looking wrestler. It’s his first year out, he’s learning the ropes, but in the last couple of tournaments he’s started to understand some things.”
