Lynx try to bury Bulldogs early, Olson pours in 18

WEBSTER CITY — There was an 18-minute game that the Webster City boys’ basketball team dominated inside the WCHS gymnasium Friday night. And then there was a 14-minute game that was all Hampton-Dumont/CAL.

Those extra foul minutes made a world of difference.

WCHS hung on for a 57-46 victory over the Bulldogs, but the final score only served as frustration for head coach Marty McKinney afterwards.

“We played very well in the first half, particularly on defense, and we took away what they wanted to do and got after them,” he said. “The second half was kind of the opposite. Our defensive intensity dropped and offensively we got really carless with the ball.

“It was two completely different halves and that’s kind of how our season has been, with a lot of ups and downs.”

WCHS (9-5, 6-4 NCC) raced out to a 37-12 halftime lead and then scored four quick points in the opening two minutes of the third quarter to push the lead to 41-12.

Not much went right after that though.

Hampton-Dumont/CAL (3-11, 1-9 NCC) outscored the Lynx 11-4 over the last six minutes of the third period and then opened the fourth on a 9-0 spurt. What was once an almost 30-point WCHS lead was now in the teens. The Bulldogs never got it to single digits though.

“Give Hampton credit because they played really hard in the second half,” McKinney said. “They were motivated.”

The Bulldogs scored as many points in the fourth quarter (23) as they did in the opening three quarters combined.

Tyler Olson was the catalyst in both halves for WCHS en route to a team-high 18 points to go along with five steals. Carter Neuroth reached double figures as well with 14 points, and he also dished out three assists.

“Tyler did some good things,” McKinney said. “He had a lot of deflections and got some good things going in transition, especially in the first half.”

Jamin Stuhr (seven points) and Ty McKinney (five points) combined for 12 bench points. Drake Doering rained in a pair of 3s for six points, Will Tasler had four, and Tavis Eklund registered three points and six rebounds.

Jordan Severs led the Bulldogs and all scorers with 19 points.
