STORY CITY — More times than not, a full team is going to be a successful team in a dual tournament format.

As it always does, Webster City had all 14 weights filled at Saturday’s Norsemen Duals, and the Lynx reaped the benefits.

Not only did WCHS wrestle well, but it was also the beneficiary of 24 forfeit wins — or half of its haul of 48 overall victories — en route to a runner-up finish for the second consecutive year.

The Lynx pummeled Central Decatur (60-15), Roland-Story (64-12), OA-BCIG (60-21) and Saydel (71-10) in the opening four rounds. But just like a season ago, they were unable to get by North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont/CAL in the final round. The Bulldogs claimed seven of the final eight weights to storm by WCHS for a tournament-title clinching 49-21 triumph.

Despite the late loss, WCHS head coach Chad Hisler was encouraged by his team’s performance.

“Up and down the lineup, I thought we wrestled more competitively against Hampton than we did (in a 46-30 loss on Jan. 9), even though it might not show it on the scoreboard,” Hisler said. “We did some good things, but there are still things we’ve got to improve on.”

WCHS ended the regular season with a 13-10 dual-meet record — the same mark it had at this point a season ago with a much more veteran lineup.

“To have the same record with a lot younger team … that’s good,” Hisler said. “We’re getting better.”

Top-ranked 106-pounder Cam Phetxoumphone went 5-0 on the day, as did Chase Rattenborg (132), CJ Hisler (170) and Trey Shannon (220/285). They combined to pile up 11 of the team’s 19 pins, four of them by Shannon, a junior who is 12-1 since Jan. 16.

“Trey has really been coming on,” Hisler said. “He’s showing a lot of leadership and I’m glad he’s back next year.”

Phetxoumphone, who only had one match reach the second period on Saturday, will take a 34-0 record with seven wins over ranked individuals into the postseason.

Rattenborg will take a wave of momentum into the Class 2A sectional tournament following his prefect performance, which included a 9-8 win over 10th-ranked (2A) and two-time NCC champion Jaycob Martzahn of Hampton-Dumont/CAL. Rattenborg locked up a cradle twice and built a 9-2 lead after two periods; Martzahn took care of the WCHS junior by major decision earlier this season.

“That’s a huge win for Chase,” Hisler said. “(Martzahn) is on the other side of the district, so that should help (Rattenborg’s) confidence.”

Rattenborg needs just five more wins to become the Lynx 20th individual all-time to reach 100 victories.

Like Phetxoumphone and Shannon, CJ Hisler pinned every opponent in front of him.

Jordan Vankham (138) and Evan Estlund (152) were both 4-1 on the day. Reece Sadler (120), Nick Gasca (145), Cole Bingham (160) and Broden Miller (220/285) were all 3-2. Brayden Henely (113), Codey Berg (126), Truman Klein (182) and Dylan Burnette (195) picked up two wins each.

WCHS will now prepare for Saturday’s sectional in Humboldt. The top two individuals at each weight will advance to districts, while the top two teams will move on to the regional duals.
