ELDORA — Final scores don’t always tell the entire story.

Take the South Hamilton wrestling team’s quadrangular here on Tuesday. At a quick glance, the Hawks tumbled three times with losses to Eagle Grove (47-32), BCLUW-SH (45-24) and West Marshall (48-36).

Delve in a little bit and you’ll see that South Hamilton was far more competitive than the final scores indicate. Only BCLUW-SH won more matches, 6-4, while the Hawks tied Eagle Grove and West Marshall, 5-5.

Forfeits have hindered South Hamilton in dual meets all season and that continued to be the case on Tuesday. The Hawks were open at 106, 113 and 120 pounds — 18 free points for their opponents. They picked up just three forfeit wins themselves over the course of the three duals.

On the mat, South Hamilton went 14-16 with 10 pins. Two grapplers — Lane Swenson (170/182) and Trevor Thompson (195) — went 3-0. Four others — Jose Galdeano (132), Kaelen Miller (138), Brent Greenfield (160) and Colton Willis (220) — went 2-1. Sheldon Tapper (152) and Stellen Willis (285) both added one win.

Six South Hamilton wrestlers notched at least one pin, with Galdeano, Miller, Swenson and Colton Willis all securing two quick wins.

Colton Willis’s lone loss came at the hands of second-ranked (Class 1A) Joel Mendoza of Eagle Grove in the opening dual of the night.

Coming off a Heart of Iowa Conference title last week, Swenson reached the 30-win benchmark on the season in relative ease. Up at 182, he decked Eagle Grove’s Felix Gaspar in one minute. Following a forfeit against BCLUW-SH, he was back at 170 against West Marshall’s Ben Kielman and needed just 57 seconds to finish off his night.

Thompson moved to within one win of reaching 30 on the campaign. He showed Eagle Grove’s Isaac Olson the lights in 46 seconds, ground out a 6-1 decision over BCLUW-SH’s Lucas Gunderson and then picked up a forfeit in the final dual.

South Hamilton will travel to Pocahontas on Saturday for the Lynn Moody Invite. Wrestling will get underway at 10 a.m.
