Freshmen take the lead in SH girls’ win over Eagles

DES MOINES — A freshman led the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team to a Heart of Iowa Conference victory here Tuesday night.

That shouldn’t come as a surprise. Hallee Feaker has been doing that for the Hawks all season.

But it was another freshman, just called up to the varsity, that made a significant contribution that caught the eye of head coach Mark Henderson in the Hawks’ 58-43 victory over winless Saydel.

Feaker canned a pair of 3-pointers and led all scorers with 17 points. Classmate and varsity newcomer Zoey Duns looked right at home with 10 more points.

“The girls were ready to go from the opening tip … I was really happy with how we played,” Henderson said. “It was a good game to get some playing time for some inexperienced players. We had a couple girls (Duns and fellow freshman Kate Barkema) get their first varsity minutes and they really took advantage of it.

“I thought Hallee had her best game overall for us. She got us in our offense and kept it flowing.”

South Hamilton (6-7, 4-5 HOIC) raced out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter and never looked back. The Hawks led 37-20 at the half and 49-31 after three quarters.

Saydel (0-15, 0-9 HOIC) was aided by a bevy of free throws, and the Eagles could have made it a game had they had more success. They connected on just 17 of 35 attempts at the charity stripe.

The two teams combined for 49 fouls and 60 free throws. South Hamilton made good on only 12 of 25 attempts.

Brookelyn George also canned a pair of 3s and notched seven points in the victory. Emma Lewis knocked down one shot from long range and matched George with seven points. Caleigh Hewitt also had seven points, while Aneesa Balderas finished with five and Hailey Diersen four.

Rachel Barton (13 points) and Emily Lowe (11 points) scored in double figures for Saydel.

South Hamilton will return home on Friday to take on eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Gilbert at 6 p.m.
