Hawks win 4 titles, place 3rd at CS Round Robin

Swenson, Thompson dominant again; Miller, Willis join them on top of podium

MANLY — One of the more successful days for the South Hamilton wrestling team in recent memory included four individual championships and a third-place finish in the team standings at Saturday’s Central Springs Round Robin Tournament.

Lane Swenson (170 pounds) and Trevor Thompson (195) were their usual dominant selves, and Kaelen Miller (138) and Colton Willis (220) joined them at the top of the podium for the Hawks, who scored 189 points to trail only Central Springs (284) and SH-BCLUW (209).

Eight of nine South Hamilton grapplers placed third or better.

“This was an awesome day and I’m really proud of our guys,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “Every single kid we brought wrestled well and I thought we really turned a corner. What’s fun as a coach is when you watch them do moves you’ve shown them in practice and they’re starting to see the success.”

Swenson improved to 11-0 on the season with four victories, three of them by fall.

“Lane’s bracket was the most quality bracket,” Brodie said. “All of those kids have solid records, but Lane was never out of control. He had to work for it and that was good.”

Thompson steamrolled through his challengers. He notched four first-period falls, the longest bout going 1:18, to push his record to 11-1 on the season.

“Trevor was a hammer and he just looks different this year, the way he approaches his matches and the way he wants to go out and dominate,” Brodie said. “It’s a really good thing.”

Willis won a pair of matches by fall, the last over Central Springs’ Teddy Behrends in 4:34. Behrends led 6-1 when Willis locked up a cradle early in the third period.

“Colton had the match of the day for me,” Brodie said. “(Behrends), we knew he was solid … Colton had never won a championship before, but he kept his head in that match the entire time.”

Miller earned his gold following a fall over Coy Smith of Mason City Newman in 58 seconds. Three wrestlers finished with the same record, but Miller’s quick fall over Smith was used as the tiebreaker.

Brent Greenfield (182) was a runner-up for the Hawks, and Eli Angove (126), Jose Galdeano (132) and Dominic Summers (285) all placed third. Sheldon Tapper (160) was fifth.
