Lynx unstoppable, Olson unhittable in NCC runaway

WCHS shells CGD to stay in league driver’s seat

CLARION — It’s going to get tougher, everyone on the Webster City baseball team knows that. But, for now, the Lynx are simply enjoying themselves.

Their early romp through the North Central Conference continued Wednesday night to the tune of 10 hits, a nine-run at bat and an 18-0, 5-inning whipping of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

WCHS (9-4, 4-0 NCC) has outscored its first four league foes 50-3, including 31-0 just this week. But the four teams (Clear Lake, St. Edmond, Iowa Falls-Alden and CGD) the Lynx have beaten are a combined 5-10 inside the NCC, while the three teams still on the horizon (Humboldt, Algona and Hampton-Dumont) are 6-5.

And the Lynx are taking nothing for granted.

“We stress to the boys that we need to play at the level we’re capable of playing at all times,” WCHS head coach Adison Kehoe said. “The scores aren’t really indicative right now of how many things we still need to work on.”

Sixteen runs in the fourth and fifth innings ensured a shortened game against the Cowboys (1-8, 0-4 NCC). Eight different Lynx players recorded at least one hit, and eight also drove in at least one run.

Eighth grader CJ Hisler was a productive 2 for 3 with four RBIs at the bottom of the order. He had a pair of two-run singles in the nine-run fourth frame.

“CJ came up with some big hits,” Kehoe said. “He’s quickly becoming a nice, potent hitter in our No. 9 spot.”

Tyler Olson, Beau Klaver and Devon Stoakes all had RBI singles in the fourth. Olson roped a two-run double in the fifth and Jacob Hirsch came off the bench to supply an RBI infield single.

Tyler Olson finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Stoakes, Dylan Steen and Caleb Olson all drove in two runs.

Tyler Olson’s mastery on the mound continued, as the sophomore right-hander improved to 5-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.47, second-best in Class 3A among pitchers with 20 or more innings under their belts. He gave up just two singles and struck out nine.
