Hawks give Trojans a free pass

15 walks too many to overcome in home loss

JEWELL — Kyle Galetich called it one of the weirder games he’s ever watched from the dugout and the numbers back up the South Hamilton head baseball coach’s bold claim.

The Hawks’ pitching staff took a no-hitter to the seventh inning, yet trailed West Marshall 5-2. South Hamilton walked off the field allowing just three hits in the game, but fell to the Trojans, 10-2.

Like Galetich said: weird.

“I don’t even really know how to explain it,” Galetich said. “I haven’t seen anything like it.”

Walks during much of the game and errors late explain it.

Four South Hamilton pitchers — starter Carter Hewitt and relievers Tycin Barkema, Cole Berg and Quinton Grove — combined to walk 15 batters and strike out 15 others. Throw in five errors, four of which occurred during a five-run seventh inning for West Marshall (17-4), and the picture becomes clearer.

“If you’re walking that many guys, it’s tough to win,” Galetich said.

Hewitt, a lanky sophomore southpaw, struck out nine, but walked seven in four innings on the bump. Barkema, a talented freshman, issued four more free passes with four strikeouts in 21⁄3 innings of work.

“Carter and Tycin are both younger guys and they’re getting experience,” Galetich said. “There’s a lot of potential there.”

Berg was touched for four runs, but none of them were earned, in just 1/3 of an inning. Grove also recorded one out and fanned one.

South Hamilton threw 195 pitches in the game. Hint: That’s a lot.

The South Hamilton bats didn’t fare much better than their counterparts though. Trojan hurlers Gabe Jones and Peyton Hart combined to twirl a four-hitter. The Hawks (8-6) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on RBI singles by Cade Flaugh and Brock Galetich. Cole Berg also singled and Zeke Balderas ripped a double.

“I didn’t think we swung the bats very well,” Kyle Galetich said.

South Hamilton was at home last night against ninth-ranked (Class 3A) and Heart of Iowa Conference co-leader Gilbert. It will hit the road to take on Prairie City-Monroe Friday night.
