WCHS baseball takes it on chin against Tornadoes

STORM LAKE — Adison Kehoe made one point multiple times as he discussed his Webster City baseball team’s road loss to Storm Lake Tuesday night: Don’t be fooled by the final score.

The Tornadoes touched the plate at least once in all six of their at bats en route to a 10-4 victory over the Lynx, but Kehoe, the WCHS head coach, felt something shift with his ball club.

“I’m not one for moral victories, but this was definitely a step in the right direction because that’s a good team we played,” Kehoe said. “The score is not indicative of how well we played in certain situations. So we’re close and I’m excited. We’re starting to get things put together.”

Both teams scattered seven hits, but Storm Lake (4-1) feasted on nine walks and also stole 10 bases. Lynx starting pitcher Dylan Steen dropped his second straight decision after allowing six hits and four earned runs in four innings of work. He issued three free passes and struck out five.

Steen won all eight of his decisions on his way to a second-team all-state (Class 3A) accolade a summer ago, but Kehoe says his hard-throwing right-hander is a better pitcher this season despite what the numbers say.

“He’s 0-2, but right now mechanically he’s better this year than he was last year,” Kehoe said. “This is the cleanest I’ve seen him throw in a couple of years.”

Steen had two hits and an RBI at the plate, as did eighth-grader CJ Hisler. Tyler Olson, Sean Carver and Ty McKinney all singled.
