No-no, Rams: Olson pretty much perfect on bump in Lynx win

Sophomore needs just 64 pitches to twirl first career no-hitter

JEFFERSON — Efficient, dominant and pretty much perfect — that about sums up the pitching performance of Webster City sophomore right-hander Tyler Olson here Wednesday night.

Painting the outside corner with one fastball after another, Olson needed just 64 pitches — 54 of them were strikes — to complete the first no-hitter of his promising prep career in a 3-0 victory over Greene County.

Olson struck out nine and didn’t issue a single walk. Just one WCHS error prevented a perfect game.

“Obviously the numbers speak for themselves,” WCHS head coach Adison Kehoe said. “It was pretty … it was a clinic and just fun to be around. He presented his outside fastball with an umpire that was very consistent at giving him that pitch. When he stays in his rhythm and hits his spots, the rest kind of takes care of itself.”

Olson got behind in the count against just one batter. The rest of the Rams had no chance against his bevy of pitches.

“All of the balls that were put in play were defensive swings,” Kehoe said. “He established his fastball and then spotted his curveball.”

WCHS (2-2) didn’t need much offensively and finally found an opening in the fifth inning to break up the scoreless contest. CJ Hisler, one of two eighth graders in the starting lineup, roped a RBI single for the game-winning hit.

The Lynx tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh inning and finished with six hits. Sean Carver went 2 for 3 and scored two runs. Ty McKinney, the other eighth grader in the lineup, added a single and touched the dish.

“CJ had a pretty big hit for us,” Kehoe said. “The bottom of the order, I know they’re young and still working on things, but they showed that they’re varsity ready.”

Dylan Steen and Devon Stoakes added singles.

Austin Delp took the loss on the bump for Greene County (2-2).
