ALLEMAN — Logan Peters took home four medals, three of them gold, and the South Hamilton boys’ track and field team bagged four event victories against a massive field of full and partial teams at Monday’s North Polk Coed Invitational.

Facing five other Heart of Iowa Conference teams, as well as athletes from Ames High and several other schools, the Hawks put together 80 points to place third behind North Polk (93) and Nevada (81).

Peters was the catalyst of the team’s seven top-three finishes. The senior won the 1,600-meter run in 4:46.63, just a step ahead of teammate and silver medalist Quinton Grove (4:46.92). The two ran the opening and anchor legs on the Hawks’ victorious 4×800 relay (8:22.22), and Peters also ran the anchor 800 on the top distance medley relay (3:44.77) in the field.

Conner Hill and Cole Berg joined the 4×800; the same foursome set the school record and placed eighth in the event at the Drake Relays on Friday. Hill ran the 400 leg of the distance medley, while Brock Galetich and Sam Lewis opened the event on the 200 legs.

Peters and Hill finished second and third, respectively, in the 800. Ames standout Noah Kohut-Jackson was the first to the finish line in 2:00.83, Peters crossed in 2:03.39 and Hill in 2:04.66.

Zakee Newman collected South Hamilton’s other gold medal. He buried the two-mile field by 36 seconds with a winning time of 10:14.58.

SH girls seventh

Lily Skartvedt continued her late-season surge in the throws, and hurdlers Hailey Cavan and Rylee Woodall both medaled to lead the South Hamilton girls’ team at the North Polk Coed.

The Hawks claimed six medals and tallied 571⁄2 points to place seventh. North Polk (130), Roland-Story (83) and Nevada (79) held down the top three positions.

Skartvedt earned South Hamilton’s only gold medal, as she again had a season’s best performance in the discus with a top throw of 113 feet, 4 inches. In the shot put, the senior occupied the second-place spot with a heave of 34-3.

Cavan and Woodall secured the silver and bronze medals in the 100 hurdles. Cavan leaned across the finish line in 16.77 seconds, while Woodall wasn’t far behind in 16.96.

South Hamilton picked up two relay bronze medals. Cavan and Skartvedt were joined by Kelbe Krumm and Emily Greenfield in the 4×100 (54.34). The quartet of Krumm, Skartvedt, Abby Ervin and Anna Lammers completed the distance medley relay in 4:54.67.
