Hay the NCC long jump champ, Lynx seventh

Algona celebrates team crown by one point over pre-meet favorite IF-Alden

ALGONA — Three of Webster City’s five medals and 23 of its 52 points came during the field events at Thursday’s North Central Conference girls’ track and field meet.

The Lynx finished seventh in the eight-team field, ahead of only Clear Lake (41 points).

Algona pulled off an upset on its home track, as the Bulldogs snuck ahead of pre-meet favorite Iowa Falls-Alden over the final two events to secure the team title. The two were locked at 1461⁄2 points entering the final two events. Algona won the 4×100-meter relay to pull ahead by five and then hung on for third place in the 4×400 that was won by the Cadets for a one-point victory, 1621⁄2-1611⁄2.

Ashlyn Hay was the lone gold medalist for WCHS. A year ago she struggled to a ninth-place finish in the long jump at the league meet, but on Thursday the junior left the other leapers in the rearview mirror. Hay’s best jump of 16 feet, 113⁄4 inches was more than a foot past her closest competitor.

Hay’s top leap of the season (17-11⁄2) currently ranks fifth in Class 3A.

Zoey Woodle also medaled in the long jump, as her best effort of 15-71⁄4 was good enough for third. Lexi Nichols added a bronze medal in the high jump after clearing 4-10. Nichols entered the meet as the defending NCC champion in the event.

Woodle claimed the Lynx only individual medal on the track, as she placed third in the 200-meter dash in 27.63 seconds. Woodle, Hay, Tatum Goings and Alayna Finucan added a bronze medal in the 4×100 relay (53.76).

WCHS will now set its sights on Thursday’s 3A State Qualifying Meet in Charles City. Field events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
