Dynamic duo leads Wildcats past Lynx
Anderson and Westling combine for six goals, Guendulay 14 saves for Lynx in loss
On a cold and rainy evening, the Wildcats relied on Amber Westling and Alexa Anderson to do all the offensive damage in a 6-0 victory over the Lynx.
“We came out flat-footed from playing a game the night before,” WCHS head coach Paul Baedke said.
Humboldt (6-3) won its third consecutive match, a stretch in which it has outscored its opponents 18-0. In the Wildcats’ six victories this season, they’ve not allowed a goal while scoring 27 times.
Westling put WCHS (2-6) on its heels less than a minute into the bout when she slammed a shot past goalkeeper Josselin Guendulay for a 1-0 Wildcats’ lead.
Guendulay quickly found her footing though, as she saved a penalty kick at the five-minute mark to keep the Lynx deficit at one goal, but another Westling score in the 25th minute gave Humboldt a 2-0 advantage.
“Our defense toughened up,” Baedke said. “I felt good only being down two goals at halftime. We came out in the second half and had a couple good shots, but did not get any of them to cross the goal line.”
One or two goals for WCHS wouldn’t have mattered though because the second half was all about Anderson.
The Humboldt senior rattled off four goals over the final 40 minutes. She scored in the 47th, 48th, 78th and 80th minutes.
The Wildcats hammered 20 shots on frame at Guendulay, who came up with 14 saves. WCHS countered with just three shots on goal.
“Josselin continued having an excellent game, making save after save,” Baedke said.
The Lynx aren’t scheduled to play again until a May 10 road trip to take on Iowa Falls-Alden at 5:30 p.m.
