Whitmore and Harfst win on track, Lynx third at Poky

POCAHONTAS — Bronze was the medal of choice for the Webster City boys’ track and field team here last night, but the Lynx managed to sprinkle in plenty of gold as well at the Pocahontas Boys Relays.

Individual victories by Garrett Whitmore in the 400-meter low hurdles and Max Harfst in the 800, as well as from the 4×200 and distance medley relays helped to propel WCHS into third place in the team standings with 118 points.

Humboldt continued to pour it on in regular season meets and dominated the team race with 177 points. Pochahontas Area nudged out the Lynx for second with 123.

“This is the first time we’ve scored in every single event,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “We ran all relays and were trying some different things and we found out what we needed to.”

The Lynx piled up six third-place finishes to go along with one runner-up result.

Just like they did at the team’s home meet on Tuesday, Whitmore and Harfst owned their individual runs. Whitmore circled the track and navigated his way over the hurdles in a winning time of 57.37 seconds. Harfst’s two circuits of the track took 2:04.18.

Whitmore ran a 200 and Harfst had the anchor 800 in the distance medley, which clocked in at 3:52.10. Carson Struchen also ran a 200 and Lincoln LaSourd took care of the 400.

Whitmore, LaSourd and Struchen all celebrated the 4×200 win in 1:36.00, as did Trey Mathis.

Hisler said WCHS left some points on the track. He opted to hold Whitmore and LaSourd out of the individual sprints, which usually produce big points.

Freshman J.J. Moore took home the only piece of silver after his second-place effort in the shot put (47 feet).

Individual bronze medals went to Jacob Willson in the 3,200 (11:05.00) and Piaszynski in the 1,600 (5:00.13). The sprint medley (1:39.40), 4×800 (9:06.12), 4×100 (45.77) and 4×400 (3:47.93) relays were all third as well.
