Spartans handle WCHS girls in a sweep

Fisher sees signs of progress, not enough to earn a victory on courts

WEBSTER CITY — Mark Fisher knows a program isn’t built overnight. He just hopes to see incremental steps in the right direction each time his Webster City girls’ tennis team steps onto the court.

Although the score might not indicate it, the Lynx head coach was able to latch onto a few positives during a 9-0 loss to Grundy Center at the WCHS courts on Tuesday.

The Spartans dictated the games and controlled the matches, but every so often Fisher saw glimpses of moving forward.

“I did see some girls play some good points,” he said. “Unfortunately, Grundy Center is also really good at making you hit multiple great shots and we couldn’t do that. You have to give Grundy a ton of credit; they are an extremely athletic group of girls who have had a lot of success in numerous sports and it shows up on the court.”

Fisher pointed to Teagan Gourley’s effort in the No. 2 singles slot for WCHS. Grundy Center’s Reegan Zinkula rolled to a 10-1 victory, but Gourley’s inspired play impressed her coach.

“I thought Teagan played the best match of her career,” Fisher said. “The score didn’t show how tightly she played a very good athlete in Zinkula. She was aggressive, she executed some great points, but again just ran into a girl who made her play multiple great shots. If she keeps playing like that all year, she will have some success.”

Fisher was also pleased with the performance of No. 6 player Makaylee Draeger, who fell behind Alivia Brandhorst 7-0 and then took two of the final five games in a 10-2 setback.

“(Draeger) got a little flustered with her first varsity match, but settled down, made some adjustments and battled,” Fisher said.
