Snyder-less Gilbert wins at R-S, Hawks third

STORY CITY — Even without the best player in the state in its lineup, the Gilbert girls’ golf team proved to be talented enough to claim the Roland-Story Invite team title Friday evening at River Bend Golf Course.

Britta Snyder, a Baylor commit and Gilbert junior who won the Class 3A state title by 13 shots a season ago, was off competing in a tournament in Florida, but the Tigers didn’t miss a beat by posting a 383 to nip host and runner-up Roland-Story (385) by two strokes. South Hamilton (395) was in the hunt as well and placed third with a season-low score.

“I thought we competed very well,” South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. “Our scores are reflecting our practices, which are good.We just need to continue fine-tuning our game.”

Katelyn Sogard’s 93 led South Hamilton and put her fourth on the individual leaderboard. Krista Swenson (94) was one shot behind her teammate in the sixth position.

Cortney Harris (106) and Grace Young (111) added counting scores for the Hawks.

Gilbert’s Alli Austin was the individual champion with an 86, five shots clear of runner-up Kate Rahfeldt of Roland-Story.
