Ferrell fantastic, Lynx win

Senior misses a hole-in-one by an inch, posts a 2-under-par 34

WEBSTER CITY — The first hole at The Links is a short par-3 straight down the hill, nothing more than a chip and a putt.

Webster City senior Nathan Ferrell came within an inch of eliminating the putt Friday afternoon. Not exactly a bad way to start a round.

Ferrell stuck his tee shot just beyond the hole and sucked it back to the lip, one rotation away from a hole-in-one during the Lynx North Central Conference triangular meet against Iowa Falls-Alden and Hampton-Dumont.

It certainly would have been a memorable moment had the ace occurred, but it played no part in the outcome.

Ferrell rolled, and so did the Lynx.

Ferrell sprinkled in a pair of birdies with seven pars for a 2-under-par 34 on the flat track to claim the individual victory by seven shots over a handful of players, including teammate Drake Doering. He led WCHS to a runaway team win, as the Lynx posted a 160 to beat Iowa Falls-Alden (176) by 16 shots and Hampton-Dumont (219) by 59.

“It was a great day,” WCHS head coach Eric Dawson said. “That’s the best round we’ve put together all year as far as team depth. That’s our home course and I know I probably can’t expect us to play that well up at sectionals, but if we do we may have a chance to qualify for districts.”

Ferrell, a two-time all-state player, was in complete control of his game, the only frustrating moment coming at the par-4 fifth hole when he missed a four-foot putt for birdie. He did birdie the par-5 seventh along with the opening hole.

“He’s an amazing player,” Dawson said of Ferrell. “He’s been hitting the ball really well lately and he knows what he’s capable of. He can go really low.”

In addition to Doering’s 41, WCHS received a 42 from Trey Lyons and a 43 from Garrett Arnold to round out the scoring. Devon Stoakes posted a 44, while Josh Casady shot a 48.

Doering was poised to turn in a round that hovered around even-par, but several miscues late proved costly. He played the final three holes at 5-over.

Dawson continued to see improvements out of Arnold and Stoakes, both freshmen.

“The two freshmen are really getting better as the season goes on,” Dawson said. “Garrett Arnold is an unbelievable worker; he plays until dark every night. So he’s got the bug and now it’s starting to pay off.”

Jackson French, RJ Ford and Kyle Arends all shot rounds of 41 for Iowa Falls-Alden. Mason Johnson was Hampton-Dumont’s low man with a 52.

WCHS was scheduled to take part in the Panorama Invite at Lake Panorama National on Saturday, but the tournament was postponed because of the weather. The tournament has been rescheduled for this afternoon at 3 p.m.
