Peters in mid-season form after 6 practices

SH senior solid in first 1,600; WCHS banks two top-10 results at ISU?Indoor

AMES — A lack of practice didn’t appear to bother South Hamilton senior Logan Peters at yesterday’s Iowa State High School Boys’ Classic.

Because of the extended basketball season, Peters has been with the Hawks’ track and field team for just one week. But six practices later, the defending Class 2A state champion in the 1,600 meters turned in a time that would have been good enough to win a medal in the mile at last spring’s state meet.

Peters was with the leaders in the 1,600 with 200 meters to go and eventually placed fifth in a time of 4:34.30. There were 103 total runners in the event.

“Before the race, I told him I thought a 4:38 or a low 4:40 would be good, but he always out-smarts me,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said. “I think he kind of surprised himself too. It’s a really good start to the season.”

While South Hamilton sent just Peters to the ISU Indoor, Webster City took a stable of competitors that collected a pair of top-10 finishes.

The Lynx 1,600 medley (3:49.00) and 4×800 (8:35.87) relays placed seventh and ninth, respectively.

Despite being sick, Max Harfst ran a pair of solid 800s on the relays. He turned in a 2:05 on the anchor of the medley following a personal-best 2:03 on the first leg of the 4×800.

Garrett Whitmore, Lincoln LaSourd and Kasey Porter ran the initial three legs of the medley. Alex Hooker, Tucker Judkins and John Piaszynski followed Harfst in the 4×800.

“Max had the flu (on Monday) and he clearly felt better (yesterday), but he’s still sick,” WCHS assistant coach Tony Bussan said. “So for him to run a 2:03 and then come back to run a 2:05, he’s having a great start to his senior year.

“The medley group did a great job. The 4×800, in the last two or three seasons we’ve been trying to get to 8:35 by the end of the season, so this is exciting to have something to build upon.”

Whitmore, Hooker, LaSourd and Porter teamed up to place 26th in the 4×400 (3:44.69).

Freshman JJ Moore gave WCHS a 22nd-place finish in the shot put (44 feet, 3 inches). Whitmore took 30th in the 60-meter dash (7.54 seconds), as did Piaszynski in the 1,600 (4:56.54), and Kaiyu Levongkhom added a 39th-place finish in the long jump (17-73⁄4) and 43rd-place result in the 60 hurdles (9.55).
