HUMBOLDT — If one meet is any indication, then last season was just the tip of the iceberg for Max Harfst.

The Webster City middle distance runner put the finishing touches on a banner 2018 season with a trip to the state track and field meet in the 800 meters last May. And on Friday, he picked up right where he left off.

Harfst won the 800 and turned in the fastest leg on the Lynx winning 4×800 relay at the Nielsen Family Boys’ Indoor at the newly opened Humboldt Recreation Center. His double-gold effort helped WCHS register 86 points, good for third place in the six-team field.

“It was great to compete in a great new facility in Humboldt,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “I liked the way we competed in our first meet.”

WCHS brought home nine medals and Harfst led the way. He won the 800 in 2:08.79 and had an opening split of 2:07.95 on the 4×800. Alex Hooker, John Piaszynski and Tucker Judkins joined him on the relay.

Kasey Porter, JJ Moore, Garrett Whitmore and Piaszynski all won individual medals as well.

Porter placed second in the 400 (58.75). Moore (shot put, 44 feet, 4 inches), Whitmore (60-meter dash, 7.65 seconds) and Piaszynski (1,600 meters, 5:13.36) were all third.

Bronze also went to the Lynx 4×200, 4×400 and shuttle hurdle relays. Whitmore, Porter and Lincoln LaSourd were all on two of the bronze-medal relays.

Fourth-place finishes went to Austin Lampman in the shot put (43-4), LaSourd in the 60 (7.66) and Malachi Montes in the 60 hurdles (9.66).
