JEWELL — Walking away with a split was a step in the right direction. Taking what was learned in the practice room and incorporating it onto the mat was an even bigger step.

South Hamilton head wrestling coach Dan Brodie walked out of the Hawks’ gymnasium satisfied Tuesday night after his club picked up a dual-meet win over Belmond-Klemme, 45-30, and dropped a decision to Forest City, 54-30.

Beyond the outcomes, Brodie liked what he saw from his grapplers, from their competitiveness to their techniques.

“I thought we wrestled well and we’re showing signs of improvement,” Brodie said. “We went out and competed. We did a better job on our feet and we did a better job underneath. We have a long ways to go, but I’m happy with what we’ve done the last couple of weeks.”

South Hamilton (4-12) won six matches on the mat — five of them were by fall — and picked up another seven forfeit victories. The Hawks went 2-6 against Forest City and split the eight bouts against Belmond-Klemme.

The dual against the Broncos came down to forfeits. B-K gave up 24 free points to just six surrendered by South Hamilton.

Lane Swenson (152 pounds), Nathan Wilson (182) and Zach Larson (285) all went 2-0 for South Hamilton. Trevor Thompson (195) and Colton Willis (220) picked up one win each on the mat.

Swenson showed a dominance that Brodie said was absent as the sophomore dealt with a shoulder injury prior to the Christmas break. Healthy now, he overwhelmed Forest City’s Blake Skjeie for a fall in 2:43 and later disposed of the Broncos’ Jaden Warren in 2:46.

“It was nice to see Lane bounce back from that injury,” Brodie said. “He wrestled really well and got us bonus points in both matches.”

Wilson, Thompson and Larson all decked one foe. Wilson needed just 57 seconds to dispatch B-K’s Tristan Halfpop. Thompson flattened Forest City’s Jacob Trunkhill in 1:28. Larson wasted no time in showing the Broncos’ Brandon Acuna the lights in 14 seconds.

Willis was a 10-9 winner over B-K’s Cedar Lucio. The winning points came on a reversal in the waning moments of the third period.

Alan Gandara (120), Eli Angove (120/126), Michael Delegard (145), Sheldon Tapper (160), Landon Stolee (170), Wilson and Larson all earned one forfeit win.

South Hamilton will travel to Monroe this evening for a Heart of Iowa Conference triangular with sixth-ranked (Class 2A) PCM and Greene County.
