Lynx stage big rally vs. Ballard, handle DCG

WCHS closes night with loss to Indianola; Doolittle, Olson and Rattenborg all 3-0 with a combined 9 pins

INDIANOLA — A furious rally over the final four weights in the opening dual of the night catapulted the Webster City wrestling team to a successful evening on the mats here last night.

Trailing Ballard 35-15 when the lineup turned over to the lightweights for the final four matches, WCHS ripped off three pins and picked up another victory on a forfeit to claw back for the dual-meet victory.

Ballard was docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, which made the final score 39-34 in the Lynx favor.

WCHS kept the momentum and never trailed in a 48-32 thumping of Dallas Center-Grimes. Indianola spoiled the potential for a perfect performance with a 51-24 rout of the Lynx in the nightcap.

“It’s all about match-ups and bonus points and Indianola matched up really well against us,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “We came out a little flat against Ballard, but then came on and then wrestled really well against DCG. At the end of the night, we came out of here with two wins and that’s really positive. We’ve just got to be more consistent.”

Freshman 10th-ranked (Class 2A) 106-pounder Camron Phetxoumphone ignited the comeback against the Bombers when he decked Elijah Moore in just 52 seconds. Reece Sadler (113) secured six more points on a forfeit and second-ranked Drake Doolittle (120) pulled WCHS within striking distance with a first-period pin over Reese Broer.

That put the dual on the shoulders of sophomore Chase Rattenborg (126) and he responded with a fall over Timothy Lang with one second remaining in the first period.

All eight of the Lynx wins over DCG were by fall; 17 of their 19 wins on the night ended early. The only problem was that they also gave up 17 falls.

Doolittle, Rattenborg and sixth-ranked Caleb Olson (195) all went 3-0 and they combined for nine of the team’s pins. Doolittle and Olson remained perfect on the season.

“Caleb and Drake both dominated again, and Chase had a very good night and wrestled smart,” Hisler said. “(Rattenborg) sometimes gets in positions where he gives up points to get points, but (last night) he stayed in good position.”

Doolittle, now 8-0 on the season with eight pins, moved closer to a pair of coveted school records. He now sits just five wins away from the all-time mark of 145 held by Gavin Dinsdale and five pins shy of the career benchmark of 93 held by Connor Larson.

Phetxoumphone, Nick Gasca (138) and Sean Godfredsen (152) all went 2-1 for the Lynx. They combined for five more falls.

Phetxoumphone suffered the first setback of his budding career in a nail-biter, 4-2, against Indianola’s Ryder Downey. The deciding points came in the waning moments of the second period; Phetxoumphone attempted a throw and inadvertently pulled Downey on top of him for a takedown.

“It was a good match, but Cam just made a freshman mistake and he’ll learn from it,” Hisler said.

Sadler, Brady Auderer (132), Daltyn Peck (145) and Malachi Montes (285) all earned one win.

WCHS will be at home on Saturday to host the Dick Kennedy Memorial Duals at 10 a.m. The Lynx will be joined by Southeast Polk, ranked No. 1 (3A) in the state and 14th nationally, as well as Woodward-Granger and Clear Lake.
