JEWELL — For 16 minutes, the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team showed it belonged on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday night.

Over the final 16 minutes, South Central Calhoun flexed its talented muscles.

Locked in a two-point game at the half, the seventh-ranked (Class 2A) Titans outscored South Hamilton 37-11 over the final two quarters, including 24-5 in the fourth, to pull away for a 53-25 non-conference victory.

“We hung tough with a good team for about 21⁄2 quarters, (but) eventually the pressure they put on us, both with their defense and with their offensive rebounding, wore us down,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “The biggest positive from this game is that the girls saw, in the first half, what we are capable of being as a team. We just have to be able to put it together for the whole game.”

After shooting 45 percent in a season-opening win over Collins-Maxwell last week, South Hamilton (1-1) connected on just 28 percent (9 of 32) against the Titans. Aneesa Balderas canned the team’s lone 3-point basket.

Senior forward Sydney Friest led the Hawks with 11 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Balderas added six points, but no other South Hamilton player notched more than three.

Maddie Jones went off for 22 points to pace South Central Calhoun (3-0). The Titans drained six triples, two of them by Jones.

Turnovers plagued the Hawks, particularly in the second half. They finished with 28 miscues.
